Here’s a premise I can kind of understand. Big! Things! Happen! and then eventually, life is simply life again. And what’s a big thing for me may not be a big deal to anyone else. Tim Kreider’s We Learn Nothing gives us essays about family, friendship, addictions, and politics along with cartoons about the same.

“Write your life in three statements about hair.” That’s a prompt I use from Burroway’s text Imaginative Writing in my creative writing classes, and whoa how it all pours out. For so many, hair is a big aspect of life. Elizabeth Acevedo’s Inheritance: A Visual Poem, illustrated by Andrea Pippins, dedicates brilliantly drawn pages and delicate language to this fact.
