Standing on one foot while also on a hill—now that’s a challenge. Here at Cedarmere (@friendsofcedarmere) as Poet in Residence, I’m balancing all my loves: poetry, yoga, meditation, watching clouds in the sky. (I’ve also been following two monarch butterflies, and if I were them, I’d be very annoyed by now.) Here there’s a balance of quiet and chatter, flowers and insects, the coolness of the house and the heat of the summer. I’m finding my way through all the in-betweens. It’s exhilarating to feel this alive.
With much gratitude, today I’ve begun my Poet In Residency at Cedarmere. The generous Friends of Cedarmere already gave me a tour along with some tea and a writing journal. I am so fortunate to life this life. I’m looking forward to writing these next two weeks.
Learn science. Learn history. Learn culture. Learn gratitude. Also get a personal memoir woven through. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer offers lessons about life and nature. One of the pieces is structured like a lab report, which excites me very much (I teach creative nonfiction and I teach Writing in the Sciences, so it was made for me). Plus, I earned my undergrad in Oneonta, so the landscape — and the cold — came back to me so vividly.
Grateful for @roifaineantpress for sharing three of my poems in Staircase. Also, they chose the perfect image for accompaniment. That’s some skillful editing right there.
Louise Bourgeois’s art is vast in materials, subject, and size. The thread that has always moved me most has been Femme Maison. Something about the architecture of a body and the femininity of a building offers solid practicality and sad truths.
Two weeks! Feels like two decades since I’ve done a full workout. I’m still not there yet, and what I’m able to do is a challenge. Even so, muscle memory is amazing. The body remembers how to move, how to balance, how to be.
